Project overview

PWM Engineering was appointed to support the electrical design for a specialist nickel refinery facility. The project required a practical design approach that considered high-temperature process infrastructure alongside the general electrical building services required for safe operation and occupancy.

The requirement

The client required electrical design input for process equipment and associated building services. This included assessing electrical demand, supporting MCC specification, coordinating power distribution and ensuring key systems were designed with compliance, safety and buildability in mind.

PWM Engineering scope

  • Load assessment and demand calculations for process and building services loads.
  • Cable sizing calculations including voltage drop and thermal considerations.
  • Support for MCC specification and process equipment supplies.
  • Distribution design and coordination with site infrastructure requirements.
  • Lighting design considerations for safe industrial operation.
  • Emergency lighting design support in line with BS 5266-1 principles.
  • Design documentation suitable for review, procurement and installation planning.

Technical considerations

The design had to support demanding process equipment while remaining practical for installation and future maintenance. Cable sizing, containment routes, protective device coordination, load diversity, voltage drop and thermal derating were key considerations.

Outcome

The project provided the client with a coordinated design basis for electrical infrastructure, helping support procurement, installation planning and compliance review. The page can be strengthened further with approved photos, redacted drawings or excerpts from calculation schedules once available.
